David Ortiz nicknamed “Big Papi”; was born November 18, 1975 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. David Ortiz is a designated hitter for the Boston Red Sox. In January of 2003 the Boston Red Sox signed David Ortiz who was a free agent. In 2004, David Ortiz played a remarkable role in guiding the Boston Red Sox to their first World Series Championship in 86 years. In 2005, David Ortiz set a career high 47 home runs with 43 of them as a designated hitter. David Ortiz finished the 2006 season with a Boston Red Sox franchise record of 54 home runs. David Ortiz finished the 2007 season hitting .332 with 117 RBI’s and 35 home runs. Among many other achievements David Ortiz is a 5-time All-Star, a 2005 Hank Aaron Award winner, nine-time Silver Slugger Award winner, 5-time Edgar Martinez Award winner, and MVP of the 2004 American League Championship Series and American League Player of the Month for September 2005 and July 2006. David Ortiz is also a three time World Series Champion in 2004, 2007 and 2013. David Ortiz wrote a book with Boston Herald columnist Tony Massarotti about his life titled; “Big Papi: My Story of Big Dreams and Big Hits”. The book was released in 2007.
